Keeping track of lunar cycles gives us the opportunity to look back over the previous month, take stock and have a think about what we’ve been up to. This past month, what have you enjoyed? What do you want to lay to rest? There’s a New Moon tonight, giving you the perfect opportunity to let go of anything that doesn’t serve you and to build on what brings you joy; the following ritual using Tarot cards is a simple but effective way to release negativity and bring your focus on to your blessings.
You will need:
- Tarot cards: The Sun, The Star and Death.
- Three candles (either: three white candles or one black, one yellow, one white).
- Three pieces of paper and a pen.
What to do:
- Lay your three candles in a curved line. Place the Sun card in front of the left-hand (yellow) candle, The Star in front of the centre (white) candle and Death in front of the (black) right-hand candle.
- On your first piece of paper, write a list of at least three things that you are grateful for which have happened in the past month. Start each sentence with “I give thanks for…”
- Light the (yellow) candle above the Sun card and read your list aloud – place the paper on top of The Sun card when you are finished.
- On your second piece of paper, write a list of all the negativity from the previous month that you wish to release. Begin each sentence with “I let go of…”
- Light the (black) candle above the Death card and read out this list – when you are finished, place the piece of writing beneath the Death card.
- On the final piece of paper, write all your hopes for the coming month, beginning each sentence with “I aspire to…”
- Light the (white) candle above the Star card and read your list of hopes out loud – when finished, place the list on top of the Star card.
Allow the candles to burn for a little while as you meditate on all the lovely things you already have in your life and all the blessings you want to attract in the coming month. When you’re ready, blow out the candles with all the enthusiasm as if they were sitting on top of a birthday cake and make a wish!
The Lists.
- Tear up the Death card list and throw it away (preferably in a bin outside your home which you don’t pass every day).
- Keep your list of blessings and read them if ever you feel a little blue.
- Finally, read your list of hopes regularly and during the next lunar month try to do everything in your power to make at least one of them come true.
Go the extra mile.
Be more mindful of all your blessings between now and the next new moon – focus on any little things that make you smile. These could be as obvious as a windfall or as small as a particularly affectionate cuddle from your cat. Write them down and keep them safe for your next new moon ritual!
“Let the grateful heart sweep through the day that it may recognise in every hour some sweet blessing.” – Henry Ward Beecher.
