Releasing the Ties that Bind

Magician - Amber Weske

The Rabbit Returns!

Deepest apologies to my readers for my absence; as you know I was going through the bittersweet transition of having my significant other move in with me.  The ‘sweet’ part is probably pretty obvious, but what’s the ‘bitter’ all about?  Well…

Ever since I was sixteen, I have moved around a lot.  In fact, in just seven years I moved home a  grand total of nine times - and that doesn’t include the time I spent backpacking!  I was constantly subject to the whims of flatmates, family and crazy landlords, and my lack of autonomy drove me crazy.

However, three years ago I found not only a flat but a home and a personal source of pride: I was completely independent and I was able to express myself with books, butterflies and my two beautiful cats.  After so many years, I had finally come home!  This is the happiest I’ve ever been and I know that my partner and I are going to be even happier still.

And yet… I’ve been so fiercely independent for so long that I know I’m going to struggle to let go of my hard-won self sufficiency; which is why I have created this simple (but effective!) Tarot ritual to help me let go of my restrictive thinking.  At the end, I’ll be giving you some tips for how to moderate it for any particular ties you would like to cut.

What I used:

  • Two pieces of ribbon – one in my favourite colour (purple), the other in my partner’s (green);
  • A photo of my significant other and I together,
  • Three Tarot cards to represent me (9 of Pentacles), my partner (Knight of Cups) and the home I want the flat to become (10 of Cups);
  • Keys to the flat.

What I did:

  • Set up a small sacred space using incense, candles, the photograph, cards and keys.
  • Wrap the purple ribbon around the 9 of Pentacles card and the green ribbon around the Knight of Cups.
  • Tie the end of the purple ribbon to the house keys.
  • Sit and remember all the good times I’ve had as a ‘bachelorette’ in my flat (let’s ignore the fact that I’ve been with my partner longer than I’ve lived in the apartment- I was a bachelorette!).
  • Untie the keys and unwrap the cards.
  • Weave the ribbons together – tie one end to the keys and the other to the 10 of Cups (our ideal future).
  • Sit and daydream about all the good times to come, remember all the happy times we’ve already had.
  • Give thanks for my incredible good fortune.

Why those cards?

Nine of Pentacles:  This card stands for accomplishment, independence, self reliance, love of life and indulgence.  It was a card I aspired to and felt that I had – to some degree – attained while living alone.

Knight of Cups:  I chose this card to represent my relationship with my partner – as in, who he is to me – rather than representing him as a person.  The Knight of Cups is the archetypal knight in shining armour; he represents romance, idealism and a love of beauty.

Ten of Cups:  Happiness, peace, commitment, safe haven and ideal love.  Of all the cards, this one to me stands for ‘happily ever after.’

Versatility

I know this little ritual is quite specific (and probably TMI), but with a few simple tweaks it could easily be made to suit many situations.  For example, doing it backwards could be a ritual to heal a broken heart.  Use green ribbon, a photo of yourself and the Ace of Pentacles and – voila! – you have a ritual to help you become better with money.  Be creative!  Experiment with different ribbons and symbols to suit your needs.  Let me know what you come up with!
